Graphic Workshop Professional 16 Revision 2

Graphic Workshop Professional 16 has been released.

We've added new functionality to the known universe's most popular image management application, improved its performance and generally refined it to better get along with Windows 10 and 11. (We hasten to add that it still performs admirably under earlier builds of Windows, all the way back to Windows XP, if you're feeling retro.)

New this weekend:

  • Application Security and Performance: A number of issues in the initial release of Graphic Workshop Professional 16 have been refined, improved and fortified. We recommend that all users of Graphic Workshop update to this release.

  • UltraLight Screen Clock : An issue that prevented The UltraLight Screen Clock from opening under some configurations of Windows has been addressed and disabused of its bad behavior.

  • Splice Animation and Videos: A rounding error that could see white lines appearing under some videos in the Splice Animations and Videos window has been stomped.

  • Archive Manager: Several Archive Manager user interface issues have been resolved.

From the initial release:

  • Speed: A quicker and more efficient architecture to make the most of the latest releases of Windows.

  • Splice animationsSplice Animation and Videos: Assemble complete animations and videos with a few clicks. The Splice Animations and Videos window is a production studio with the learning curve of a bar of soap.

Add sound and captions, bring content of varying resolutions together, get up to speed in minutes.

Click on the animation to your right to see  an example video created with this sophisticated functionality.

Be sure to have a look at the section in the Reference document of Graphic Workshop's manual entitled Videos for an overview of all the new animation and video functionality.

  • Trim Videos: Prune your video content with unsurpassed ease. No complex arithmetic is required.

  • Filter Animations and VideosFilter Animations and Videos: Apply Graphic Workshop's legendary still-image Filters window to your animation and video content. Subtly adjust the color and contrast of your video content, or transform it into a movie that looks like it's streaming from an alternate universe. With awesome power comes awesome responsibility.

Click on the example frame to your right to see this feature in action.

  • Text to Speech: Create spoken human speech with the Text To Speech UltraLight ancillary application included with Graphic Workshop. Text To Speech UltraLight will speak using any compatible voice installed in Windows, and it can save its conversations to sound files, suitable for use in other applications. One example of its work can be heard if you click on the animation near the top of this section.

  • Rostrum camera panRostrum Camera: Create rostrum camera animations and videos like the one to your right with a few clicks. Add visual interest to still photographs without having an AI deepfake them to look like extraterrestrials.

  • DCM: Graphic Workshop 16 includes a downloadable no-cost plugin that supports DICOM medical imaging. A useful tool for health-care professionals, the DCM plugin will also allow anyone with a detectable heartbeat to view their test results. The DCM plugin includes access to all the patient metadata included with DICOM imagining documents.

  • JPEG Security: The Graphic Workshop JPEG library has been updated to the latest release, 3.0.4. We'd like to take this opportunity to urge all users of Graphic Workshop to update to this release.

  • PNG Security: The Graphic Workshop PNG library has been updated to the latest release, 1.6.44. We'd like to take this opportunity to urge all users of Graphic Workshop to update to this release.

  • MPG: Graphic Workshop will now open, view, process and convert MPEG-2 MPG documents.

  • Window Menu: The application list in Graphic Workshop's Window menu has been updated, and several issues which could prevent these menu items from appearing have been stomped.

  • FLAC: The 64-bit edition of Graphic Workshop 16 supports FLAC audio, for lossless audio compression in really small files.

  • AIFF: Graphic Workshop 16 includes support for Macintosh AIFF audio documents.

  • Animate Transitions: A bug that could cause the Animate Transitions window to fail to save its files has been disabused of its bad behavior.

  • Folder Sync Thumbnails: A bug that could hitherto cause thumbnails to be mis-created or ignored when Graphic Workshop automatically updated its browsers with new files from other applications is history  .

  • Video Codec: An issue that prevented the Select Video Codec window in Setup from appearing under some configurations of Windows has been addressed.

  • IFF: Graphic Workshop 16 can create IFF documents with or without CAMG chunks, the latter option being useful for a number of historical architecture emulations.

  • Audio Metadata: Graphic Workshop 16 can add and edit metadata for several popular audio formats, including MP3 and OGG. Specify the titles of songs, the artists responsible for them and the albums from which they originated.

All the Graphic Workshop plugins have been upgraded to install in version 16. Note that if you're currently using an earlier version of Graphic Workshop and its attendant plugins:

  • Be sure to uninstall the version 15 plugins before you install Graphic Workshop Professional 16. Failing this, Graphic Workshop Professional 16 should prompt you to do so automatically the first time you run it.

  • You'll need to download and install the new plugin installers to run under Graphic Workshop Professional 16.

  • The plugin installers will install plugins for both the 32- and 64-bit editions of Graphic Workshop as applicable — you don't have to download separate 32- and 64-bit plugins.

If you're using a registered installation of the Graphic Workshop RAW Digital Camera and Smartphone plugin for an earlier release of Graphic Workshop, note that your existing registration key will work with the version 16 plugin — you won't have to buy it again.

As in years past, when you run Graphic Workshop Professional 16 for the first time, it will look for a previous installation of Graphic Workshop Professional 14 and optionally copy your existing configuration, so you won't have to set everything up by hand. Even your open browser windows will be preserved.

Note that if you installed both the 32- and 64-bit editions of Graphic Workshop Professional 15 on the same computer, the automatic uninstall will only remove one of them. You'll need to uninstall its sibling by hand.
