Graphic Workshop Professional 10 Revision 6
(additional notification)

Graphic Workshop Professional 10 has been updated. In this release:

  • Application Security: Addresses a particularly stealthy and pernicious memory issue which afflicts the internal configuration logic, the browser window navigation panes and the themes used by Graphic Workshop and its ancillary applications. Left to its own devices, this one could crash these applications and potentially compromise your Windows security.

We urge all Graphic Workshop users to update to the current release and nail this
    vulnerability before it nails you.

  • View Mode Mystery Files: Adds functionality to Graphic Workshop's View mode to automatically run Identify Mystery Files if you attempt to view a picture and it proves to be unreadable. This is a common issue with graphics downloaded from the Internet, which not infrequently arrive with incorrect extensions. The View logic will prompt you if you encounter such a file, and optionally rename it and proceed to open it in View.

This also works if you associate Graphic Workshop with one or more of the file types it knows how to open, and subsequently double-click on one in another application, such as File Explorer.

  • Quicker Zoomed Thumbnails: Improves the Zoomed Thumbnails display mode. The previous Graphic Workshop update added support for high-resolution graphics thumbnails. This one integrates them into the browser window caching logic, so the zoomed thumbnail mode is substantially faster and more responsive.

Especially if your eyesight isn't what it once was, you need to experience this. Right-click in a Graphic Workshop browser, select Thumbnails from the sub-menu that appears and make sure Zoom Windows Thumbnails is enabled. Right click and select View Mode from the sub-menu that appears and select Zoomed Thumbnails.

    This feature requires Windows 10.

  • Thumbnail Pre-cache: Adds an option to disable thumbnail pre-caching for selected browsers. A brief explanation follows — grab something solid.

When Graphic Workshop first opens a browser — for example, when it boots up — it will show you thumbnails for as many files as will fit in the window. It will thereafter pre-cache thumbnails, silently loading them during moments when it's idle, such that when you scroll your browser, there won't be a noticeable delay as it fetches its thumbnails from disk.

This feature can be enabled or disabled for the entire application in the Setup window.

This upgrade adds an item to the browser right-click → Thumbnails menu to disable pre-caching for selected browser windows. You might wish to do this if you keep multiple browsers open in Graphic Workshop and some of them point to folders with a large number of pictures in them, or to folders you don't look at particularly often. Doing so will reduce Graphic Workshop's memory footprint.

  • Animated PNG: Improves the timing accuracy of Graphic Workshop's new animated PNG viewer, and deals with a few weird-beard animated PNG files that we encountered.

  • Association Wizard: Removes Graphic Workshop's Association Wizard, which hitherto would associate your choice of graphic file types with Graphic Workshop, so Graphic Workshop could serve as a viewer from other applications, such as File Explorer.

Recent changes to Windows appear to have broken Association Wizard, possibly irretrievably.

We hasten to add that you can still associate file types with Graphic Workshop through File Explorer's Open With window. This is somewhat more intuitive than Association Wizard, and totally bulletproof.

Please see the Associating File Types with Graphic Workshop section of the Reference document of Graphic Workshop's manual for an updated discussion of how to handle file association.

  • Windows Libraries: Adds fields to the Application tab of the Graphic Workshop Setup window to allow you to customize the names used for Windows' public and private libraries and folders as they appear in Graphic Workshop's browser navigation panes.

  • Performance: Addresses a number of GDI and performance issues that software developers never really stop meddling with.

  • Documentation: Updates the documentation.

If you haven't installed Graphic Workshop Professional 10 yet, you might want to review a more extensive list of its new functionality and enhancements.

GIF Construction Set Professional 10 Revision 4

GIF Construction Set 10 has been updated. Among its new and enhanced features are:

e-Paint 10 Revision 3 (second notification)

e-Paint 10 has been updated. Among its new and enhanced features are:

  • Application Security: Addresses a particularly stealthy and pernicious memory issue which afflicts the internal configuration logic and the themes used by e-Paint. Left to its own devices, this one could crash the application and potentially compromise your Windows security.

  • PNG Security: Updates the primary PNG libraries used by e-Paint to the latest release. This addresses several potential security and image quality issues. We urge all the users of our software to keep it up to date and stay ahead of file vulnerabilities... there are some really bad people hiding under rocks as you read this, doing everything they can to ruin your day.

  • JPEG Security: Updates the primary JPG libraries used by e-Paint to the latest release. This addresses a potential security issue.

  • Ripples Texture: Adds Ripples to the e-Paint CGI Textures window. Create a faint disturbance in a tranquil pond, or crank it up to maximum and visit an alternate universe during lunch.

  • Image Libraries: Updates all the image libraries used by e-Paint to address a theoretical bug that could have introduced unwanted artifacts at the right edges of imported and saved graphics.

  • Association Wizard: Removes file type association from e-Paint's Association Wizard, which hitherto would associate your choice of graphic file types with e-Paint, so e-Paint could serve as a viewer and editor from other applications, such as File Explorer.

Recent changes to Windows appear to have broken this function of Association Wizard, possibly irretrievably.

Association Wizard is still available to configure other Alchemy Mindworks applications, such as Graphic Workshop and Presentation Wizard, to call e-Paint as their default paint application.

We hasten to add that you can still associate file types with e-Paint through File Explorer's Open With window. This is somewhat more intuitive than Association Wizard, and totally bulletproof.

Please see the Association Wizard and File Association section of the Reference document of e-Paint's manual for an updated discussion of how to handle file association.

  • Performance: Addresses a number of GDI and performance issues that software developers never really stop meddling with.

  • Documentation: Updates the documentation.

Announcing Font Wrangler 10 (second notification)

Font Wrangler 10 has been released. Among its new and enhanced features are:

  • Application Security: Addresses a particularly stealthy and pernicious memory issue which afflicts the internal configuration logic and the themes used by Font Wrangler. Left to its own devices, this one could crash the application and potentially compromise your Windows security.

  • PNG Security: Updates the primary PNG libraries used by Font Wrangler to the latest release. This addresses several potential security and image quality issues. We urge all the users of our software to keep it up to date and stay ahead of file vulnerabilities... there are some really bad people hiding under rocks as you read this, doing everything they can to ruin your day.

  • JPEG Security: Updates the primary JPG libraries used by Font Wrangler to the latest release. This addresses a potential security issue.

  • Image Libraries: Updates all the image libraries used by Font Wrangler to address a theoretical bug that could have introduced unwanted artifacts at the right edges of imported graphics.

  • Color Selection: Updates the color selection windows that appear in Font Wrangler to include an editable hexadecimal color value field. This allows colors to be directly copied and pasted into web page HTML documents, and between applications that support this notation.

  • Validation: Enhances the sneakiness of the validation logic to reduce the likelihood of Font Wrangler un-registering itself and thereafter deciding that its key is already in use because Windows 10 has silently updated something. Hopefully this one nails the problem until the end of time. Yes, we said that last year too, but Windows 10 proved to be sneakier than we'd anticipated.

  • Performance: Addresses a number of GDI and performance issues that software developers never really stop meddling with.

  • Documentation: Updates the documentation.
