Graphic Workshop Professional 12 Revision 2

Graphic Workshop Professional 12 has been released.

We've added new functionality to the known universe's most popular image management application, improved its performance, included some fresh ancillary software and generally refined it to better get along with Windows 10 and 11. (We hasten to add that it still performs admirably under earlier builds of Windows, all the way back to Windows XP, if you're feeling retro.)

Among the new features and enhancements to Graphic Workshop Professional
12, you'll find...

In this release:

  • Alpha Channels: The initial release of Graphic Workshop Professional 12 didn't manage source graphics with alpha transparency correctly for all its batch processes, under some configurations of Windows. Now it does.

  • UltraLight Screen Clock: The revision 1 installer for Graphic Workshop Professional 12 failed to install the clock styles for The UltraLight Screen Clock under some configurations of Windows, which pretty much brought the clock to an ignominious halt. This has been addressed.

  • Temporary Files: Graphic Workshop Professional 12 now includes logic to automatically dispose of any temporary files that get left behind, freeing up some hard drive real estate. See the discussion of Temporary Files in the section of the Graphic Workshop Reference document entitled Browser Windows.

From the initial release:

  • Quick 64-bit Architecture: Graphic Workshop is now available in both traditional 32-bit and leading-edge 64-bit editions. The 64-bit software is fast, gets along more favorably with Windows and pretty much never runs into memory issues. We hasten to note that registering or updating to Graphic Workshop Professional 12 will avail you of a registration key that works with either edition... or both, if you're feeling adventurous.

  • Windows 11 Compatible: The version 11 software has been showing some decidedly rough edges under the Windows 11 betas, and may stop installing and/or running therein when Windows 11 is released. Graphic Workshop Professional 12 rocks under Windows 11.

  • Animate Objects: Create animated photo-dodecahedrons and photo-cubes – like the one to your right – with a few clicks. These animations are suitable for use with web pages, social media and for attracting attention to your e-mails. Select Image → Animate Objects.

  • Animation Conversion: Convert – and more to point – batch convert and process videos and animations. See the discussion of Animations in the Graphic Workshop Reference document.

  • Audio: Convert among Graphic Workshop's supported audio formats.

  • MP3: Graphic Workshop now supports full MP3 reading and writing.

  • Ogg Vorbis: Graphic Workshop now supports full Ogg Vorbis reading and writing – Ogg Vorbis being a sophisticated MP3 alternative.

  • Web Gallery: Graphic Workshop's Web Gallery window has been completely re-written. Create sophisticated web pages for your photographs with clickable thumbnails, paging and index and way more... even if you've never been within a light-year of HTML coding. Select some pictures, and then select Image → Catalog → Web Gallery.

  • JPEG Security: Graphic Workshop's Turbo JPEG and IJG JPEG libraries have been updated to the latest releases to address some security issues.

We'd like to urge all users of Graphic Workshop to update to this release as quickly as possible.

  • WebP: Updates the library that imports WebP graphics for Graphic Workshop to address several potential security issues and to improve its image quality.

  • Archive Manager: The Archive Manager application will now extract files from archive formats other than ZIP. The 32-bit edition supports RAR, and the 64-bit edition supports pretty much every archive format in the known universe.

  • Archive Manager Open With: The Archive Manager right-click menu now includes access to Windows' Open With list, as it appears in File Explorer.

  • Screen Capture: The 64-bit edition of the GWS Camera screen capture now correctly handles capturing screens that have been adjusted with Windows' "make everything bigger" option.

  • Digital Camera RAW Plugin: The Digital Camera plugin has been updated to include a number of additional cameras.

  • Windows Open With: In addition to Graphic Workshop's configurable Open With function, accessible through the browser right-click window. the Open With item now offers access to Windows' Open With list, as it appears in File Explorer.

  • Calendar Wizard UltraLight: Create printable wall calendars with your photographs in this simplified edition of our popular Calendar Wizard application.

  • Memory Leak: A memory leak that beset the Paint functions of Graphic Workshop has been addressed.

  • Montage: A bug that could crash Montage on occasion has been stomped.

  • ART Plugin: An issue with the ART format plugin that could cause it to report spurious errors from time to time under some configurations of Windows has been addressed.

The Graphic Workshop Printed Reference has been revised for the version 12 software, and it includes sections for all the new functionality. It's available through Amazon — there's a link to it at the Graphic Workshop web page, and you can access it through the Get The Graphic Workshop Printed Reference item of Graphic Workshop's Help menu. Alternately, just click on the book to your right.

All the Graphic Workshop plugins have been upgraded to install in the version 12 software. Note that if you're currently using an earlier version of Graphic Workshop and its attendant plugins:

  • Be sure to uninstall the version 11 plugins before you install Graphic Workshop Professional 12. Failing this, Graphic Workshop Professional 12 should prompt you to do so automatically the first time you run it.

  • You'll need to download and install the new plugin installers to run under Graphic Workshop Professional 12.

  • The plugin installers will install plugins for both the 32- and 64-bit editions of Graphic Workshop as applicable — you don't have to download separate 32- and 64-bit plugins.

If you're using a registered installation of the Graphic Workshop RAW Digital Camera and Smartphone plugin for an earlier release of Graphic Workshop, note that your existing registration key will work with the version 12 plugin — you won't have to buy it again.

As in years past, when you run Graphic Workshop Professional 12 for the first time, it will look for a previous installation of Graphic Workshop Professional 11 and optionally copy your existing configuration, so you won't have to set everything up by hand. Even your open browser windows will be preserved.
